Shaheed Ashraf Sehrai – The Man of the Book!

Mohammad Ashraf Sehrai achieved martyrdom on May 05, 2021 after Indian state murdered him under custody in Jammu part of the UN-designated disputed territory of Jammu and Kashmir.

Shaheed Sehrai, 77, was put under custody by India in July 2020 and imprisoned in a jail in Udhampur district, some 300KM away from his residence in Srinagar – the capital of Indian-occupied Kashmir.

He was leading Tehreek-e-Hurriyat Jammu and Kashmir – a pro-freedom political party which seeks complete freedom from Indian military occupation of Jammu and Kashmir.

Shaheed Sehrai rose to become chairman of the party in 2018 and was serving as party secretary general since 2004 when the party was formed. He was working side by side with Syed Ali Geelani, the nonagenarian resistance icon of Kashmir.

Popular as “Man of the Book”, Sehrai would never compromise on basic fundamentals of Islam, and the ideology he professed. For his conviction, he paid by his life.

Sehrai shifted to Baghat area of Srinagar due to his increased political engagements from his native Tikkipora village in Lolab valley of Kupwara district. He was born in 1944.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters and three sons. While in jail during his political activism, his family had to sell ancestral land to manage the affairs of the house. He spent over 16 years in jail since 1965.

One of his sons achieved martyrdom in May 2020 in a gun battle with Indian forces. He was commander of pro-freedom armed rebel group — Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.
